Bethanechol is directly acting cholinergic agent. It acts directly on the cholinergic receptors. It belong to caholine esters. Uses of Bethanechol is given below. There is also the pharmacological properties and uses of choline esters drugs in the tables.
Pharmacological action Of Bethanechol:
- In paralytic ileus it act on the smooth muscles of GIT by interacting with the M3 receptor. It increases the tone of GIT, stimulates paristaltic movements and also increases GIT secreation. The result to cause defecation
- In urinary bladder it cantracts the detrusor muscles and relex the trigone and sphincter which causes urination.
Bethanechol Uses:
Bethanechol has selective muscarinic action on GIT and urinary bladder. It is used in postoperative urinary retention and paralytic ileus. It is preferred because.
- It has a wide margin of safety.
- It has no nicotinic actions.
- Its muscarinic side effects are completely revised by atropine.
- In urinary retention, it reduced resistance to the flow of urine by contracting the detrusor muscles and relaxing the trigone sphincter.
- In paralytic ileus, bethanechol start peristaltic movement and increases the GIT tone by interacting on M3 receptor.
Adverse Effects Of Bethanechol:
Following is the side effect of bethanechol.
- Dizziness.
- lightheadedness.
- nausea, vomiting.
- abdominal cramps/pain.
- diarrhea.
- increased saliva.
- urination.
- sweating.
- flushing.
- watery eye.
- headache.
The adverse effect can be reduced by using some precaution like rising slowely from sitting or from bed reduced the dizziness and lightheadedness.
How to Used Bethanechol:
Taken the drugs orally on empty stomach one hour before or two hour after the meal because the food decrease the absorption of the drugs and the decreases the bioavailability of drug. Take the drugs as the doctor prescribed and do not use it with doctor because of its side effects. Normally the drug is taken 3 or 4 times daily orally.
